Rooted in Mountain Communities
Alpine-otter was founded with a singular focus: providing specialized architectural consulting for the small mountain towns that define Western Canada's character. Unlike general practice firms that treat mountain projects as occasional diversions, we work exclusively within this context.
Our team has collectively logged thousands of hours walking the streets of communities from Jasper to Kimberley, documenting building traditions, interviewing longtime residents, and studying how successful mountain architecture balances practical demands with aesthetic harmony.
Our Philosophy
Mountain towns are not blank canvases. Every community we work with has evolved its own architectural vocabulary over generations. Our role is not to impose external aesthetics but to help clients understand and work within existing patterns.
This means we spend considerable time on context before offering recommendations. We study historical photographs, review municipal archives, and often conduct interviews with local heritage advocates. Only after understanding what makes a community distinctive can we offer meaningful guidance on new projects.
We also believe in practical solutions. Mountain construction faces real constraints: short building seasons, challenging logistics, extreme weather loads, and often limited local trades. Our recommendations account for these realities rather than proposing designs that look elegant on paper but prove impossible to execute.
Thoughtful integration of modern construction with mountain landscapes
Regional Expertise
Our practice maintains active familiarity with planning regulations and heritage guidelines across multiple jurisdictions. The requirements in a resort municipality like Whistler differ substantially from those in a former mining town like Greenwood or a railway hub like Field.
We have established working relationships with planning departments, heritage advisory committees, and development review boards throughout British Columbia and Alberta. When clients come to us with projects in unfamiliar municipalities, we invest the time to learn local requirements before offering guidance.
This regional depth allows us to anticipate potential approval challenges early in the design process, saving clients time and revision costs downstream.
Commitment to Preservation
While we work on new construction projects, much of our practice involves helping property owners maintain and adapt existing heritage structures. These buildings represent irreplaceable connections to community history, and their loss diminishes places in ways that new construction cannot replace.
We advocate for thoughtful renovation over demolition whenever feasible. Sometimes this means helping owners see potential in buildings they had written off. Other times it means documenting structures thoroughly before unavoidable changes occur, ensuring that knowledge is preserved even when physical fabric cannot be.
